Conversations

Today, Phil came in to the kitchen crying and saying, "I fell down! And I hurt my spleen!"

Tonight, he was in bed singing and I went in there to tell him to go to sleep...he was singing, "I'm too sexy. . . "

His Own Man

Phil went with me to drop Hayden off at baseball practice last night.

I asked Hayden if he wanted to play football this year. He said he was still thinking about it. I told him I'd sign him up but only if he was 100 percent sure he would give it his all.

Hayden asked why Phil wasn't playing any sports yet.

I said I don't think we'd even be able to get Phil out on the field. He just doesn't seem to care. he's never once asked if he could play sports. (Not tangibly anyway.)

Then I asked Phil if he wanted to play any sports. I asked if he wanted to play football? "No." Soccer? "No." T-Ball? "I don't want to play anything!"

I told Hayden that Phil may look just like him when he was that age but he is his own person and just wants to do his own thing. And right now that thing is playing Lego's and living in his own little make-believe world.

The Dropout

The little kids and I took Meredith to her game tonight. For the most part, the little ones were running around with a pack of other little kids, but then Phil came up to sit by me. Out of nowhere he tells me he is going to be a kindergarten dropout.

I said, "No. You are going to graduate from high school."

He (very upset) said, "Mooooommmmm! Pleeeaaasssseee! I want to be a dropout!

I said, "Do you even know what a dropout is?"

He said, "No."

I said, "Don't you think you should at least go to school long enough to find out what it means?"

He said, "They already said they won't tell me."

.......Oh, yeah, this is gonna be a fun year. I can't WAIT for parent-teacher conferences.
